Introduction to Smart Upsells

Overview

Giftship’s Smart Upsell block adds automatic product recommendations to your Shopify store — no manual product picks required. Drag and drop it into a Product Options or Cart Options set, Giftship’s Drawer Cart, or even checkout if you’re on Shopify Plus.

Smart Upsell integrates directly with Shopify’s Search & Discovery app, pulling recommendations from Shopify’s built-in complementary and related product algorithms. That’s different from Giftship’s standard Upsell block, where you hand-pick a single product or bundle yourself — with Smart Upsell, Shopify’s algorithms do the work, and recommendations show up right out of the box.

Layouts in Drawer Cart

Within Giftship’s Drawer Cart, Smart Upsell includes five layouts:

• Overlay
• Slide
• Carousel
• Compact Carousel
• Modern List

You control the number of products shown, the layout, and the block’s headline and description text.

Layouts in Product Options, Cart Options & Checkout

In Product Options, Cart Options, and checkout (Shopify Plus), Smart Upsell offers two layouts:

• Modern List — Display upsell products as a vertical list with large buttons for adding the product.
• Compact Carousel — Display upsell products in a compact carousel that shows a single product at a time.

Complementary vs. Related Products

Shopify’s Search & Discovery app powers two types of recommendations:

• Complementary products are cross-sells — items meant to be bought alongside the one a customer’s viewing, like a glass wine decanter with a wine bottle, or a card with a jar of pecans. You can search or browse to hand-pick these pairings yourself if you want full control.
• Related products are alternatives — different styles or similar items a customer might choose instead. Shopify’s algorithm generates these automatically, with no setup needed on your end.

Refining Recommendations

To adjust what Shopify recommends for a specific product:

1. Head to the Search & Discovery app in your Shopify admin.
2. Click Recommendations.
3. Click on the product you’d like to adjust.
