Digital Gift Messages – Blocks
Giftship’s Digital Gift Message feature allows stores to offer their customers the opportunity to send personalized gift messages to their gift recipient via email and/or SMS.
In this article we will cover a general overview of the tool, how to set up the Digital Gift Message feature, the different configuration options available, and how to view the status messages sent by customers.
1) Set up a Digital Gift Message block
Digital gift messages are added to the storefront via Giftship’s Storefront Options and can be configured through:
- Product Options
- Cart Options
- Drawer Cart
- Checkout Options (Shopify Plus only)
To add the Digital Gift Message block, create a new option set or edit an existing option set in one of Giftship’s Storefront Options, such as Product Options. Then, click the “Add block” button and select the “Digital Gift Message” block.

Within the Digital Gift Message block, there are 3 main tabs (circled in red in the screenshot below) that contain the configuration options for the block: Message Options, Delivery Options, and Format.

The Message Options tab contains settings to:
- Toggle the display of the “From”, “Gift Message”, and “Video Message” fields
- Control the character limit of the “Gift Message” field
- Set the required status of the message fields
The Delivery Options tab contains settings to:
- Select whether email and/or SMS fields should display
- Toggle the display of the “Delivery Date” field
The Format tab contains settings to:
- Select the “Simple”, “Accordion”, or “Modal” layout option
- Add text content that appears above the message fields
2) Configure Digital Gift Message delivery and emails
In addition to the above configuration found within the Digital Gift Message block, which controls settings related to the individual Digital Gift Message instance, there are additional settings to be configured that apply globally to all Digital Gift Messages.
To find these settings navigate to the “Global Settings” section of the Giftship dashboard, click on the “Gift Message” tab, and scroll down to the “Digital Gift Message Notifications” section.

This section contains settings related to the delivery of email and SMS notifications, including:
- The default timing (days following order fulfillment), time of day, and timezone for notifications to be sent out (these default values are used when the customer has not selected a delivery date on the storefront)
- Email templates to be used for the recipient and sender of the Digital Gift Message
3) Create custom Digital Gift Message email templates
Giftship contains default templates for both the gift recipient and sender, however, custom templates can be created within the app.
To create a new email template, navigate to the “Email Templates” section of the app dashboard, and click “New Template“.

In the modal that opens you can choose to create a new Blank template, build off of one of the app’s Preset templates, or create a Duplicate of an existing one.
For Digital Gift Message notifications, there are preset templates available for both recipient and sender emails that are a good starting point.

4) View the status of Digital Gift Messages
To view the digital gift messages sent by a customer, click on the “Digital Gift Messages” section from the Giftship dashboard. From the list, click on the Digital Gift Message of interest to view the details.

This page contains useful information and actions such as:
- View the message email and SMS fulfillment information in the “Timeline”
- Edit the recipient email or phone number if it was entered incorrectly by the customer
- Preview the email to be sent to the recipient via the “Actions” dropdown at the top of the page
- Resend the emails and SMS message via the “Actions” dropdown at the top of the page
