How to Create a Bulk Multi-Address CSV Order in the Giftship Backend
Giftship allows you to create bulk multi-address orders directly within the Shopify admin using a CSV-style workflow. This is ideal for handling large gifting campaigns, corporate orders, or creating orders on behalf of customers.
You can either upload a CSV file or build the order directly within Giftship’s spreadsheet-style editor. Each row represents a separate shipment (child order), following the same logic as Giftship’s standard multi-address checkout.
Steps:
Visit the Giftship dashboard and click Create Order.
Next, click the Customer button and select a customer. If you are adding a new customer, create them in Shopify first, then return to this step.
Start the order creation process by either uploading a CSV or creating the order within the CSV editor.
Each row represents an individual shipment.
Click on the Products cell to add products, then search for the items you would like to include.
Enter all required fields, including first name, last name, address, city, country, state/province, and phone number.
Once a row contains sufficient information (such as products and a valid address), Giftship will automatically query Shopify for available shipping rates.
Additional Details:
Similar to Giftship’s cart options that appear on the shipping rates page for each destination, you can add gift messages and delivery dates using the Additional Details column. Click the cell under Additional Details to enter this information. If you have cart options configured in Giftship, they will appear here as selectable options.
Addresses:
All saved customer addresses will appear in the dropdown within the address cell, or you can enter a new address manually.
Once the order is created, the address from each row will be saved to the customer’s profile in Shopify for future use. If you are uploading addresses in bulk using Matrixify or another tool, ensure the data is clean and accurate before importing.
Once your spreadsheet is complete, click Next to review and confirm the order details. When ready, click Create Order.
Important:
Bulk gifting is billed per row in the CSV. Pricing varies depending on your Giftship subscription. For full details, please refer to:
After the order is created, you can view the draft order invoice or send it directly to the customer within Giftship.
Before sending, ensure your draft order invoice template is properly configured. Refer to the guide below:
Important
Marking draft orders as paid during testing
You cannot mark a bulk multi-address draft order as paid during testing. Doing so will result in an error.
Why this happens
This error is not coming from Giftship. It is generated by Shopify, which does not allow these types of orders to be marked as paid in the admin without collecting payment through checkout.
This has always been the case for multi-address orders, even prior to the release of the bulk ordering tool.
What to expect
There will be no error when the customer completes payment through the Shopify checkout. The issue only occurs when attempting to manually mark the order as paid in the admin.
Testing recommendation
For testing purposes, it is recommended to use a development store with test payments enabled.
Summary
This behavior is expected and aligns with Shopify’s requirements around payment collection. It should not impact normal usage unless you are attempting to create orders without collecting payment.
